Lyrics: Don’t go

Don’t go

Came in from the city walked into the door
I turned around when I heard the sound of footsteps on the floor
Love just like addiction now I’m hooked on you
I need some time to get it right
Your love gonna see me through

[chorus]
Can’t stop now don’t you know I ain’t never gonna let you go
Don’t go

Baby make your mind up give me what you got
Fix me with your lovin’ shut the door and turn the lock
Hey go get the doctor, doctor came too late
Another night I feel alright my love for you can’t wait

[chorus]

Came in from the city walked into the door
I turned around when I heard the sound of footsteps on the floor
Said he was a killer, now I know it’s true
I’m dead when you walk out the door
Hey babe I’m hooked on you

[chorus]

Note: A doctor metaphor for broken hearts is not among Yazoo’s strongest contributions to lyrics writing. However, ‘Don’t go’ does have a darker twist, which does not really go along with the disco sound and the mock horror of the accompanying video clip.

Though presented as a love song, ‘Don’t go’ can also be read as a song about drug addiction, going from escapism (I need some time to get it right, your love gonna see me through) to overdose (I’m dead when you walk out the door). A clue for this interpretation may be that ‘Don’t go’ apparently developed from a Depeche Mode song called Addiction (lyrics). In any case, the killer in the final verse does not often make its appearance in straight talking love songs.
