Lyrics: Goodbye Seventies

Goodbye seventies

To your credit to the thirty faces you created
To your headache to the shape of the 1980’s
I’m glad that we don’t hear you any more
I’m tired of playing in your fashion war

To the lights to the trend setting in your head
Sunday night tears from youth cults already dead
I’m glad that we don’t hear you any more
I’m tired of fighting in your fashion war

[chorus]
Goodbye Seventies

To your credit to the thirty faces you created
To your subscription for the million copies of 1980
I’m glad that we don’t hear you any more
I’m tired of losing in your fashion war

[chorus]

[credit: Moyet]

Note: ‘Goodbye seventies’ is one of the three cheerful songs on the album, along with ‘Don’t go’ and ‘Bring your love down’. There is some punkish anger against capitalism and mass culture (fashion war, million copies, thirty faces you created), but there is hope of new times ahead.

This makes the song pretty funny, thanks to the wisdom of hindsight, as the eighties have not gone into history as less fashion driven than the era before it.

Luckily, Yazoo didn’t take their message in ‘Goodbye seventies’ too seriously. Vince Clarke gave the song an uptempo beat and Alison Moyet added an over the top voice. ‘Goodbye Seventies’ is as tongue in cheeck as songs get.
